This year, after doing crossfit for only about 4 months, I decided to register for the Open, actually it was my friend Patty who insisted I do it... The OPEN consists of 5 weeks, one crossfit workout per week, you don't know what it is before mid week and you just do your best and hope you make it through the next one!
There's a bunch of movements I don't do, for instance: pull ups, muscle ups, toes to bar and much more. And guess what! All of the above were in the open!! And guess what else! I managed to do all of the 5 WOD's and I gave it my best, I put in my best work and all the effort I could... Even though when I look back, I could of probably done more or better.
Here is what my last 5 saturday mornings looked like:
WEEK 1 : WOD 12.1: AMRAP 7 MIN OF BURPEES
This means, as many burpees as possible in 7 minutes, Fun eh! not really, I really hate burpees, they are just stupid and inconvinient ...
But hey I was able to get 71 burpees in 7 minutes.... When I look back that truly sucks....really. The best woman in the world got 143 burpees in 7 minutes... that's just wrong soo wrong, why on earth would you want to do more?? haha anyways get over it and wait till wednesday for week number 2
WEEK 2: WOD 12.2: AMRAP 10 MIN OF SNATCHES
30 SNATCHES @ 45pds
30 SNATCHES @ 75pds
30 SNATCHES @ 100pds
30 SNATCHES @ 120pds
This means, you start off with 30 snatches (it's the most technical olympic weight lift that exists) at 45 pounds (just the barbell), then once you are done, you add some weight 75 pounds, then once you are done with those 30 snatches you add more weight 100pounds, then when your done those 30 snatches you add more 120 pounds.... oh you have only 10 minutes to complete as many as possible .... ridiculous!!!
I was able to get to 61 reps, meaning I did 30 snatches at 45 pounds, 30 snatches at 75 pounds (witch was my PR) and one rep at 100pounds... now that one extra rep is freeking awesome... especially since my personal best was 75 pounds, meaning I lifted 25 extra pounds in a snatch... after 60 snatches.... I don't know if you understand, but that's f*ckin crazy!!
WEEK 3: WOD12.3: AMRAP 18 MIN OF BOX JUMPS, PUSH PRESS AND TOES TO BAR
15 BOX JUMPS 20"
12 PUSH PRESS 75 pds
9 TOES TO BAR
This means, you have 18 minutes to complete as many rounds as possible of all three exercises. This was probably my worst WOD, because as I said earlier, I CANNOT do toes to bar. The box jumps and push press were easy for me, no stress, then I think i spent a good 15 minutes on the bar to try and get 9 T2B, 9 ... only 9... I think I was no repped at least 76 times by my judge Andrew!!! Thanks dude! Did I mention my hands ripped open during these lovely T2B?? oh hell yeah!
So I ended up doing one complete round... yess I was able to do 9 T2B and finished it off with 15 extra BJ, and 12 PP!!! and then time ran out! ouffff
WEEK 4: WOD 12.4: AMRAP 12 MIN, WALL BALL SHOTS, DOUBLE UNDERS, MUSCLE UPS.
150 WALL BALL SHOTS (14 pds ball to a 9' target)
90 DOUBLE UNDERS
30 MUSCLE UPS
This means, you have 12 minutes to complete as many reps as possible if completed in less then 12 minutes, keep going until the clock tells you to stop! 150 wall ball shots is an actual workout... Karen, she's a bench mark girl in the crossfit world.... She was one of the first crossfit workouts I've ever done... I took a 12 pound ball and it took me 16 minutes plus..... hummm WOD #3 is only 12 minutes... looking good for me.
I did manage to finish my wall balls in less then 9 minutes! woot ! and then grabbed my rope and skipped those 90 DU!!! my legs felt like they weighed 500 pounds on those 10 first DU, my forarms were shot, and when I was done with my DU, I ran across the gym to go do muscle ups.... I CAN'T DO MUSCLE UPS! you dumb shit, why are you running?! But hey, I ran to the rings, listened to my judge trying to explain how to do a muscle up... Grabbed the rings and made my legs swing for about 45 seconds and then time was up! Oh well no muscle ups for me .... But I really don't think it was the proper time to try a muscle up or to learn how to do one... Just sayin! Hey I tried right?
WEEK 5: WOD 12.5: AMRAP 7MIN OF THRUSTERS AND CHEST TO BAR PULL UPS
3 THRUSTER @65pds
3 CHEST TO BAR PULL UPS
6 THRUSTERS
6 C2BPU
ADD 3 REPS UNTIL TIME RUNS OUT
This means, you have 7 minutes to do as many reps as possible. Did I mention to you that I can't do a pull up ?? I think so. Here's the deal, chest to bar pull ups are harder then a normal pull up, you have to pull further to hit your chest with the bar, not just get your chin over. And thrusters, well it's like a front squat with a push press as you get back up... they tend to be easy for me !
I told my judge I wanted to get through the 3 first C2B, and afterwards I would scale my pull ups with an elastic just to get a workout... I never used the elastic ladies and gents!!! So I ended up doing my 3 first C2B pull ups, got back on the thrusters 6 of them, got back to the bar did 6 C2B got back to the thrusters, 9 of those, back to the bar managed to get 5 last C2B and then time ran out! WASSUP!
Now you might think 14 chest to bar pullups is nothing, but to me it's like hiking up Everest!!! I don't freeking do pull ups, because I have a big ass and some real heavy legs! But hey I'm working on my pullups slowly. WHADDUP PULL UPS!!!!!!
I'm actually really proud of myself on this WOD!!!! All smiles!
Big thanks to REEBOK CROSSFIT YUL for having me at their beautiful gym and really pushing me through this open. Mike, Andrew, Steve, Jason and Tara, and every athlete at the gym, thank you for the fun, the sweat, the frustrations, the good times and all the encouragements!!! Y'all the best!
That pretty much sums it up for the OPEN for me, obviously I am not going to regionals, no worries about that!
But hey, this experience has taught me alot about myself. I learned that if you try, you might actualy get it, and if you don't you'll never know what you're capable of. I made new friends. I pushed my limits. I did things I never thought I was able to do and I had soooo much fun working out!!
I will definatly work harder and push myself even more in this upcoming year, because I am going to register for next year's OPEN and maybe get through regionals (perhaps a new goal?). I will work on my weaknesses, even if I hate those (burpees) I will get stronger everyday, and I certainly won't give up on becoming fit, healthy, and strong.
For those of you who are afraid of trying something new, I dare you! Get off your ass and DO IT!!!
Much LOVE
Peace
KagZter
