Okay, this weekly thing is crazy ! Thursday comes early every time! Maybe I should write on fridays, like that, fridays will come sooner! ha! I feel so smart sometimes!
Speaking of smart. I started my stages at the hospital, and I'm doing nights. Witch is cool, because I get to sleep in. But not really, since I have homework to do and studying to get done. But that also means... a lot less time spent at the gym! Sadness! Especially since the OPEN is on!!! I'll have to figure something out. There is always a solution.
Speaking of the OPEN. OH MY GOD! It's official, it has started! I don't know if I should cry or smile. 13.1 is a mixture of 12.1 and 12.2! What the hell?!?!!! I absolutly love it .... I think. I hate burpees so freeking much, but I love snatches!! And I can snatch the last weight ! woot! Doesn't mean I'm going to get there, but I can still snatch it... when I'm fresh! hahaha. It's going to be interesting! Any strategies?? Please, I accept every possibility! Mine is... I'm still thinking about it!
Speaking of thinking. I was thinking this week. Gear, all that fun stuff! Is it really necessary? I mean it's cool to have the latest nano's and the latest skipping rope, but does it really make us better athletes? What about olympic weight lifting shoes? They are awesome, don't get me wrong. I would kill to get a pair of those sweet ass adidas red oly shoes! I think I'd look like a total badass! But that's beside my point! I know a lot of people have been getting their oly shoes made for them, and that's freeking cool, but does it give you better technique? Does it make you stronger? Does it make you go faster? Does it really position your feet better in a lift? I've been told many times by different people to get myself a pair of oly shoes, and I've tried a couple of different pairs on, but I never got out there and bought them. Something is stopping me from going... Maybe the lack of money in my account... But there is something else... I just can't put my finger on it. I can see a difference in stability, when I go down for some pistols, but in squats, in any types of squats? Maybe, my technique is off a little bit, so maybe my shoes would only help if I was perfect. How cool would that be eh?! Being perfect ! AH!
And I want your opinion! So please comment!
This whole thinking process came to me when I was front squatting this week, with Patty. Both of us don't wear olympic weight lifting shoes. We don't own them. Sometimes, when I'm lucky, M'liss lends me her pair of oly shoes, for competitions and workouts that include lot's of lifting. But this week, during the front squats, I wasn't wearing them. I was wearing my good old fashion purple nanos. And Patty was wearing her good old fashion nikes. Guess what!? Both of us PRd. Just last week, I couldn't front squat 185 in oly shoes, and this week, 3 times 185, in my purple nanos! I definatly haven't become much stronger in a week. So what's up with that? Was it just a bad day last week? I don't think it was. By the way, Patty Pr'd her Front squats at 205 pounds! So jelly jelly jealous! Congrats Sistren!
Anywho, my opinion about gear and all that fun stuff would be to maybe consider adjusting your technique before spending tremendous amounts of money on shoes that don't really make such a huge difference if your technique isn't quite there yet. I mean, I've seen people squatting on their toes with oly shoes on. I mean COM'ON!!!!! Get your shit together and squat on your heels! And I'm not even going to start on the skipping rope! You will not get double unders because of a certain type of rope! You will get double unders if you practice them!!!!!!!!! Get to it!
Speaking of amazing technique. I've been studying olympic weight lifting lately, like a lot. Like, instead of studying nursing, I watch videos of these sick, awesome, strong olympic weightlifters. And shit am I ever impressed! They are putting 2 times their body weight over their heads. It's IN-SA-NE. I was watching a clip of the London olympics, and I was crying. It was beautiful. Oly lifting is a perfectionist sport. If the bar isn't in the right place, it won't stay. The barbell wins 99 % of the time. Can you imagine being part of a sport where you mostly fail? How mentally strong these athletes are? They are awesome, strong and most of all inspiring. These girls make me want to realize one of my childhood dreams.... to be an olympian. And this might be the sport. I think it's absolutely incredible what these humans are capable of doing, and I kind of want to do it. 2020!?!?
I'm being delusional right at this moment.
Speaking of being delusional. I might get a muscle up before my birthday (august)! How crazy is that! Obviously I'm training seriously about this. (Everytime I say serious next to my name, it sounds so weird!) My new friend Mark, from Rideau Crossfit, told me to check out the gymnastics WOD website! And it's pretty awesome stuff! Good for everybody. Good tips, good videos and good evolutions. Plus Carl Paoli is cute so it's fun to watch. And on top of checking that out, Patty, Lara and I decided we really wanted muscle ups under our belt. So we hired Sean Lind as a gymnastics coach! And he's freeking great! He speaks to us in Russian! (jokes) When we are with him we mostly do some technique work and he gives us homework! Guess what our homework is!? Ring dips and chin ups! Fun eh! We've only seen him once! haha, But it's great stuff! Anyways, I'm super stocked about this. I feel like I'm learning something, and if this is not working on my weaknesses, then I don't know what is! So, prepare yourselves for a video of a super excited KagZter doing a muscle up! Haha, maybe not now, but be prepared!
Speaking of being prepared. How prepared were you for the 13.1 WOD ?? How did everybody do on the first WOD? If you've done it yet! What's everybody's strategy for WOD 13.1?? I don't think I have one... Still thinking about it! I might just go all out, and leave everything on the floor. Go big or go home. Or as we crossfiters like to say : I'm gonna go H.A.M! And I might scream a little, you know just so I can embarrass myself a little, and maybe scare my opponents! hahaha #I'mkidding! ( I love hashtags) Oh Man! I have butterflies in my stomach right at this moment!!! It's going to be wild!
I like thursdays! Maybe because it's also Throwback thursdays #TBT! I wonder how that came up!? So I thought I'd throw back thursday! Who knew me back then ?? hahaha, I can't stop laughing! So many things are wrong with this picture!

The thing is with the proper gear, it's not always about getting better technique, it's soemtimes about preventing injury. Specifically shoes, here. Because running shoes and wrestling shoes, etc, aren't necessarily padded the same way. They're engineered to pad certain places and distribute your weight to help prevent repetitive stress injury. It's not foolproof, but it's still a good tool. And if you don't have the money for it... It's not all that necessary.
ReplyDeleteSometimes gear really does help for technique, though. I started aerial hoop a few months ago. My coach is taller than me and so her hoop is a 28" diameter. I would need at 26" diameter. I can do all the tricks in the larger hoop, but it's a lot harder. It requires twice the muscle and the effort than if I was in a properly sized hoop. Sometimes when I reach across, I miss the bar because I can't lean far enough that way and stay in the hoop. Sucks. I need to adjust things. Of course if I was more flexible and stronger, I'd still be able to do it well and the fact that it's harder is going to make working in a properly sized hoop a lot more fun. But still. The equipement is making the difference, there. So sometimes it is worth it.
